Lost in Translation

Farmer looking at his farm
Jennifer Theurer bio

Farmers can expertly navigate their fields with their eyes closed. They know the spots in the field that get boggy with just a half-inch of rain or that terrace that you can’t approach straight on. They know which cows will get a little grumpy if you try to tag their newborn calf, which ones will lead the rest of the herd to summer pasture, and which ones can clear the sucker rod fence around the south lot.

This knowledge is often not translated well because those same farmers are used to being a one-man band.

Clear communication

In the event they do need an extra set of hands during the busy times of moving equipment from field to field or working cattle in the spring, miscommunication is just going to happen. Sometimes even the most well-meaning helpers aren’t listening clearly either. You only hope you can all laugh about it years later.

Troy was one of those well-meaning helpers. His heart was in the right place but his ability to follow directions was half a bubble off. He hunted deer on some of my dad’s ground and talked about how he would love to help Dad out sometime. He said he has helped relatives farm in his younger years and now that he was stuck at a desk job all day he really wanted to get out on the farm again.

Remember that boggy spot I mentioned in the second sentence of this column? Well, this is where it makes its appearance. We had gotten a smidge of rain the night before. This was just the right amount of rain to create a boggy spot in the field. That’s right, the very same one my dad wanted to move equipment to while the straw dried out sufficiently.

Troy’s job was to move our 1966 Chevrolet wheat truck to the aforementioned field. My dad claims Troy was thoroughly warned about the boggy spot. There may have even been a diagram of the boggy spot’s location drawn in the dirt for Troy. Of course, there were no other witnesses, hence why my dad needed Troy.

Troy drove straight to the boggy spot and promptly buried the wheat truck. All while my dad was following him in the combine gesturing wildly and turning the air blue with his frustration.

Sometimes even our best efforts to communicate fall on deaf ears. Poor Troy.
